Our Program

Categorical – NRMP #1442440C0 – 4 positions

Preliminary – NRMP #1442440P0 – 2 positions at PGY-1 level

  • Fully accredited through ACGME
  • 4-month rotation to Strong Memorial Hospital during PGY-3 year to gain experience in transplantation, critical care and pediatric surgery – Bassett provides free housing during this time
  • Residents completing the program log approximately 1,100 operative cases
  • Average call is every third to fourth night – We are both NYS-DOH (405 regulations) and ACGME compliant
  • Many graduates enter practice some others enter fellowships
  • Specialties include General Surgery, Thoracic, Vascular, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic, Urology, Surgical Oncology, Plastics, Cardiac, and Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery
  • For residents planning a career in rural areas, electives exist for increased experience in surgical subspecialties
  • Protected conference time includes: Surgical Grand Rounds, Surgical Quality Conference, Core Curriculum, Evidence Based Medicine Journal Club, Trauma Rounds, Subspecialty Conference, Research meeting (weekly), amongst others
  • Surgical simulation lab with FLS Box trainers, Virtual Laparoscopy trainers, and SimMan for team training
  • Educational/Academic Support – ATLS, ACLS, Scientific American Surgery, ABSITE and Mock Oral Board Exam, Educational Travel Allowance, FLS, FES
  • Inpatient Surgical Service consists of approximately 40-50 adult beds
  • All patients are teaching patients with direct house-staff involvement and responsibility
  • Ward rounds supervised by Chief Residents are held each morning
  • Outpatients are seen in the Surgical Clinic by residents and attendings together
  • All applications for General Surgery must be submitted through ERAS
