Leadership is a Choice
Considerations
Leadership is an important skill for residents. Improved teamwork has been shown to be associated with decreased medical errors and improved performance. Fostering leadership and other non-technical skills may lead to more successful team structures.
Yearly Plan
- We will meet once per month, on Sundays, for two hours.
- Location and lunch: Fenimore Art Museum.
- Books provided.
- This will be an intentional 10-month workshop where residents will:
- Choose a leadership quality or skill that they want to improve on.
- Meet once per month from September to June for two hours.
- Receive a certificate and a letter documenting their participation for their residency file.
Requirements & Expectations
- Residents will apply for this workshop.
- Five residents will be chosen to participate.
- Attendance and participation expectations: residents will be excused from clinical duties during this time.
Result
After completing this workshop, participants will have developed a better understanding of why, when, and how to lead, and they will know how to build a personal path to effective leadership in all aspects of their lives as surgeons.
