Maternal Health Program

Obstetrics refers to health care for new mothers, from the first weeks of pregnancy through the baby’s delivery and postpartum days. Bassett Healthcare Network’s comprehensive maternal health care program includes education, prenatal services, labor and delivery, and neonatal and postpartum care.

Obstetrics

The aim of our obstetrics and maternal care program is to ensure the optimal health of both mother and baby during pregnancy, delivery, and after the baby is born. Our birthing centers at Bassett Healthcare Network are recognized for their “culture of collaboration,” in which our physicians and nurses will work with you to:

  • Evaluate your lifestyle and help you develop a nutrition and exercise plan for a healthy pregnancy
  • Offer advice on family planning
  • Prevent, diagnose, and treat possible conditions, such as gestational diabetes
  • Effectively manage unexpected developments during childbirth, such as lengthy labor
  • Help you create your own individualized birth plan

The Bassett Birthing Center

The birthing center at Bassett Healthcare Network offers every comfort for new mothers and their families:

  • Four Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) rooms, each with a private bath, shower, and spa tub
  • Eight postpartum rooms with refrigerators and fold-out couches
  • Operating rooms for Caesarean births
  • A special care nursery

At Bassett Healthcare Network, the health and safety of you and your baby is our first priority. Our comprehensive maternal health program includes prenatal care and health screenings, educational programs, labor and delivery, and neonatal and postpartum care.

Bassett Birthing Center is staffed by experienced obstetrical nurses, certified nurse-midwives, pediatric nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pediatricians, and OB-GYN hospitalists. Whether a nurse-midwife or hospitalist helps deliver your baby, our philosophy of care remains the same: You create your own birth plans, with minimal intervention, extensive labor support, and open communication as standard. We do not allow a water birth experience based on current ACOG and AAP guidelines.

Each new mother’s needs are discussed and incorporated into birthing plans at Bassett Health. We offer natural birthing options for uncomplicated pregnancies. High-risk pregnancies will receive extra attention and care from our experienced OB-GYNs. We also offer family planning, childbirth classes, and other women’s health services.

For patients giving birth, we know that support from loved ones and other trusted companions is crucial. During labor and birth, you may have two support persons with you through the process. You may also have a certified doula if you wish. Upon admission to Bassett Medical Center’s Birthing Center, we will provide you with two secure visitor passes which you can give to the two people you designate as companions. For the safety and health of you and your baby, these two visitors may not change during the labor and delivery process.

If you have planned a cesarean section (or C-section) in advance, you may have one of your designated companions accompany you to the operating room space for support. In the event your care team determines a C-section must be performed and this is unplanned, please understand that your care team may not allow a support person to enter the operating room based on you and your baby’s needs, safety, and urgency.

We welcome one primary support person to stay with you for up to 24 hours a day during your postpartum stay. A second support person may also join you between the hours of 11:00am and 8:00pm daily. Once your baby is settled, siblings of the new child and other children aged 12 and older may visit between the hours of 11:00am and 6:00pm daily. We strongly encourage parents/guardians to help us maximize the health and safety of other newborns on our unit, and to reduce the spread of germs to our most fragile patients, by bringing only children who are up to date with all recommended vaccinations to visit their siblings. We also ask that underage visitors be able to reliably wear a mask if needed. All visitors to the nursery must wash or sterilize their hands before entering the unit and when entering and leaving any common areas. Visitors should not visit the unit if they are experiencing any symptoms of illness or are feeling unwell.

Generally, you may have only three visitors at a time (including support persons). If both support persons are in the room, you may have only one visitor. Support people may rotate out to let visitors in. The Birthing Center Nurse Manager can extend or modify visitation arrangements based on the needs of the patient, their family, or the department/facility. Underage children count towards the total number of visitors and must be supervised by an adult that is not the post-partum parent.
