Otolaryngology
Brief Description
This elective provides experience for acquiring basic diagnostic skills, and management of otolaryngologic diseases.
Objectives
Students will become familiar with the basic head and neck examination including examination of the ear, cranial nerves, mirror and fiberoptic examination of the pharynx and larynx. The student will become familiar with radiologic and invasive diagnostic procedures of this specialty. Diagnosis of head and neck cancer, as well as management of common otolaryngologic diseases, will be acquired.
Learning Experience
Students will participate in the evaluation of patients in the ENT outpatient clinic, as well as being introduced to the basic audiologic and audiovestibular assessment of patients with labyrinthine diseases. The student will participate in inpatient rounds and consultations, and opportunities for preoperative patient evaluation and operative assisting are provided.
Feedback
The students will receive continual feedback during the clinical evaluation of patients. Specific topics and areas of reading will be recommended by the staff.
Evaluation
There is no formal examination. Final evaluation will be composed from observations made on the students interest, enthusiasm, and ability to integrate knowledge into a rational plan of action for a given patient taken in context of the students experience throughout the elective.
Data
Offered all year for one month. Maximum number of fourth year students per month: One. Housing is provided when available, with the exception of the months of January, June and July. Conferences to be attended: Journal Club, Otolaryngology Rounds, Otolaryngology Pathology Conference, Tumor Board, Educational Conferences as deemed necessary by Department Head.
