Infertility
Having Trouble Starting a Family?
You are not alone — one in six couples have difficulty conceiving and may need medical help to treat the causes of infertility. The first step in helping you through your infertility is to determine the cause.
Conception is a complex process, and things can go wrong at many steps along the way. You may have trouble producing healthy eggs or sperm, have a blocked fallopian tube, or difficulty carrying a pregnancy to full-term. After a thorough exam, our women’s health specialists will order diagnostic tests, including hormone testing, imaging studies, and sperm analysis to determine the nature of your issues.
Causes of Infertility
Infertility is a medical condition, just like diabetes or heart disease. No one is to blame. The most common reasons for male infertility are age and the health of the sperm. Female infertility causes can include:
- Age
- Blockage in fallopian tubes
- Endometriosis
- Ovarian disorders
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
Treatment for Infertility
The first step in treatment is an exam and medical history by your practitioner. After your initial appointment and further testing, the following treatments may help you have a baby:
- Surgery
- Medications — including antibiotics, hormones, and erectile dysfunction medication
- Artificial insemination — including Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
When to See a Doctor for Infertility Treatment
If you have been trying to get pregnant for more than a year, our women’s health specialists may be able to help you. Women over the age of 35 may also benefit after six months of trying to get pregnant without conceiving.
