Hip Replacement
Hip Replacement Surgery
The orthopedic surgeons at Bassett Healthcare Network perform approximately 400 total joint replacements each year. Hip replacement is an effective procedure that increases mobility and strength, relieves hip joint pain, and helps get those suffering from chronic or disabling hip pain back to their favorite activities.
All hip replacement patients are required to attend a Hip Replacement Patient Education class prior to surgery.
Diagnosis & Causes
Our specialists recommend joint replacement if non-invasive treatments have failed. Common conditions for which total hip replacement is helpful include:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Severe bone fractures
- Avascular necrosis
- Chronic joint pain that interferes with daily life
Orthopedic evaluation begins by obtaining a history, emphasizing pain levels and functional impairment, and examining the hip joint by testing stability, mobility, and strength. If further information is needed, diagnostic testing may be ordered. Frequently requested diagnostic tests include:
- X-rays
- CT scans
- MRI scans
- Bone scans
Hip Replacement Surgeries
Bassett Healthcare Network’s orthopedic surgeons offer the following hip replacement surgery options:
Partial Hip Replacement
Partial hip replacement is a procedure where the femoral head is replaced with a metal prosthesis, which rotates within the natural socket. Partial hip replacement may be recommended if the ball is degenerated to the point where hip resurfacing is not possible, and there is minimal wear on the socket. This hip replacement surgery is usually performed for certain broken hips where there is a greater risk of fracture, nonunion, or avascular necrosis.
Total Hip Replacement
Also known as “hip arthroplasty,” total hip replacement surgery removes the damaged bone and cartilage within both the ball and socket. The damaged femoral head is replaced with a metal prosthesis, just as in partial hip replacement. The damaged cartilage of the acetabulum is replaced with a metal socket, and the two prostheses are separated by a plastic liner that fits in between the ball and socket to allow for smooth movements. This procedure may be recommended if both the ball and the socket are damaged from an arthritic condition, or osteoporosis. Posterior, direct lateral, and direct anterior hip replacement are all possible approaches to performing a total hip replacement. Total hip replacement is considered the “gold standard” in treating hip arthritis.
