Liver Biopsy Procedures

A liver biopsy is an ultrasound-guided liver biopsy or CT-guided procedure that takes a tissue sample from your liver to test or diagnose a liver tumor, hepatitis, a fatty liver, and other liver diseases.

Types of liver biopsy procedures performed at Bassett Healthcare Network include:

• Percutaneous liver biopsy – under local anesthesia, a small needle is used to take a tissue sample from your liver
• Transjugular liver biopsy – under local anesthesia, an incision is made in your neck, then a thin, hollow tube (catheter) is sent through your vein to your liver. A needle is then put through the tube to take a tissue sample from your liver. This procedure is used if you are at high risk of bleeding

What to Expect During a Liver Biopsy

Liver biopsies are minimally invasive procedures, performed with local anesthesia. It is an outpatient procedure and you will typically be at the hospital for only a few hours.
