Percutaneous Needle & Transjugular Liver Needle Biopsies
Liver Biopsy Procedures
A liver biopsy is an ultrasound-guided liver biopsy or CT-guided procedure that takes a tissue sample from your liver to test or diagnose a liver tumor, hepatitis, a fatty liver, and other liver diseases.
Types of liver biopsy procedures performed at Bassett Healthcare Network include:
- Percutaneous liver biopsy – under local anesthesia, a small needle is used to take a tissue sample from your liver
- Transjugular liver biopsy – under local anesthesia, an incision is made in your neck, then a thin, hollow tube (catheter) is sent through your vein to your liver. A needle is then put through the tube to take a tissue sample from your liver. This procedure is used if you are at high risk of bleeding
What to Expect During a Liver Biopsy
Liver biopsies are minimally invasive procedures, performed with local anesthesia. It is an outpatient procedure and you will typically be at the hospital for only a few hours.
Liver Biopsy Procedures Using Interventional Radiology Techniques
Our interventional radiologists have specialty training in liver biopsies using image guidance. Interventional radiology procedures can often replace open surgical procedures, meaning there is less risk, less pain, and shorter recovery times for you.
Bassett Healthcare Network delivers interventional radiology in Central New York, in Cooperstown.
