Knee Replacement
Knee Replacement Surgery
Our orthopedic knee specialists may recommend knee replacement surgery when non-operative treatments have been exhausted. We perform approximately 400 total joint replacements each year.
Before scheduling a knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty, all patients are required to attend a Knee Replacement Patient Education class.
Diagnosis & Causes
We may recommend knee joint replacement if non-operative treatments have not succeeded. Conditions that result in joint damage include:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Osteoarthritis
- Avascular necrosis
- Severe bone fractures
- Bowed knee deformity
- Chronic joint pain that interferes with daily life
The following imaging tests may be ordered to diagnose the extent of your knee condition:
- CAT scans
- MRI scans
- Bone scans
- X-rays
Knee Replacement Surgeries
Bassett Healthcare Network’s orthopedic surgeons offer the following knee replacement surgery options:
Partial Knee Replacement
If only one section of the knee is damaged, we may recommend partial knee replacement surgery, also known as unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, or knee resurfacing. Since arthritic conditions such as osteoarthritis may damage the protective cartilage surrounding the patellofemoral, medial, or lateral compartments of the knee, it is not always necessary to replace the entire joint. In partial knee replacement, the damaged area is resurfaced and replaced with a mini artificial joint to treat the pain and stiffness, while the healthy bone and cartilage is preserved. This minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery (the NAVIO™ partial knee replacement surgery) is performed at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.
Total Knee Replacement
If extensive arthritis is present throughout the knee, our orthopedic surgeons may recommend total knee replacement surgery. Total knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, involves four basic steps: resurfacing the damaged cartilage and bone of the femur and tibia, replacing these damaged areas with a metal prosthesis, resurfacing the patella (the kneecap), then inserting a plastic spacer between the metal prostheses. This knee replacement procedure is recommended for those with severe or disabling knee pain or stiffness, chronic inflammation, or a visible knee deformity. Total knee replacement surgery results in an improved range of motion, and significant pain relief.
