The Agricultural Safety & Health Council of America (ASHCA) honored Anna Meyerhoff this spring with their annual Safety & Health Researcher Award. Meyerhoff is a senior bilingual agricultural safety & education coordinator at the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH).
"She amazes me," says Julie Sorensen, a research scientist at NYCAMH who nominated Meyerhoff for the award. "She always gives 110 percent and proactively anticipates other people's needs. During the pandemic especially she's demonstrated a nimbleness, capability, and willingness to work long hours."
In her thirteen years at NYCAMH, Meyerhoff has used her language and education skills to benefit migrant workers. She has delivered countless hours of on-farm safety training and outreach, developing curricula and written materials for herself and colleagues across the country. Her research investigates strategies to improve dairy farm safety, often administering surveys, conducting interviews, and analyzing results.
"It is an honor to receive this award and a pleasure to work with the agricultural community," says Meyerhoff. "It is nice to be recognized for my involvement in research, specifically, since that is a newer focus of my work at NYCAMH. But most of all, I am passionate about protecting the safety and health of the people who work hard every day to put food on our tables!"
Meyerhoff's underlying care for farmworkers is clear to Sorensen as well. "Anna cares for every single one of the individuals she works with and goes the extra mile. This is not just her job – it's her driving passion. We're very lucky to have her."
