Mitchell Miller Receives Ambulatory Care Preceptor of the Year Award From Binghamton University

Cooperstown, NY — In May, Binghamton University’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences named Bassett Healthcare Network’s Mitchell Miller, PharmD, BCACP, their 2024 Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) Ambulatory Care Preceptor of the Year. This prestigious, student-nominated distinction reflects the recipient’s professionalism, teaching skills, coaching, and patient care.

“To receive a student nomination in and of itself is tremendously validating; to receive the award outright is an incredible honor,” reflects Dr. Miller. “My colleagues, Ogechukwu Umerah and Temitope Awofeso, each serve as co-primary preceptors, and we put our all into providing a valuable learning experience. I must also extend my gratitude to the entire staff at Colliersville. Everybody chips in to make this a memorable opportunity for the students!”

The Ambulatory Intensive Pharmacotherapeutics (AIP) team began hosting APPE pharmacy students in 2023. In medical education, preceptors are experienced professionals who mentor students, preparing them for working in their field. Dr. Miller does outpatient work in Bassett’s Population Health and Strategy Department located in Colliersville.

“I speak for the whole AIP team when I say we strive to set our students up for success not just here on this rotation, but on future rotations and in their careers,” says Dr. Miller. “Being a preceptor is about equipping students with the real-world skills needed to translate knowledge from their courses into practice. We focus on every individual student’s needs, leaning into their strengths while helping to identify and manage opportunities for improvement. We also place a large emphasis on consistent feedback, often written, to enhance the student’s growth to a practice-ready level.

“All of our Binghamton APPE students have been exceptionally motivated, talented, and engaged. They are always eager to learn, and sometimes we learn just as much from them as they do from us. Their enthusiasm makes hosting the experience all the more worthwhile, and we hope to continue hosting pharmacy students for many years to come!”

Dr. Miller received his award at an end-of-year banquet before commencement in May.
