At the Wigmore Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Yerevan, Armenia, Dr. Badalian and a team of doctors supervised five urogynecological fellows as they performed 23 successful surgeries. The visit culminated in the Third Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Symposium on August 2 at the Marriott-Yerevan Hotel, held in cooperation with the Association of Urogynecologists of Armenia.
Dr. Badalian and other renowned speakers from the United States, UAE – United Arab Emirates, and Armenia instructed 120 symposium attendees on topics surrounding urogynecology, such as pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary incontinence, pelvic reconstructive surgeries, and advanced laparoscopic techniques, including technologies that allow for minimally-invasive procedures. Attendees listened, learned, and took part in an engaging question and answer session. Fellows received diplomas, recognizing their successful completion of the international fellowship.
This important work developing urogynecology as a subspecialty in Armenia is an ongoing passion for Dr. Badalian. In 2021, he received a prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to establish this program, building on previous work he had done advancing women’s health in Armenia. This project has been widely recognized by the Board of the Foundation for International Urogynecological Assistance (FIUGA) and has been published in the International Urogynecological Journal.
“It's inspiring to see such enthusiasm and participation in advancing our field,” shares Dr. Badalian. “The ongoing success of this project holds significance for governmental, public, and healthcare entities in Armenia, where urogynecology as a subspecialty is practically non-existent, and across the world. We are preparing future female pelvic surgeons to care for the growing needs of women with these conditions, compounding the benefits and successes across different societies and cultures.”
