“As a volunteer at Bassett Medical Center’s Emergency Department, my duties are many and varied. Fundamentally, the position entails being a conduit between patients, families, and staff. I also offer a comforting presence to anyone who needs me during times of high stress.
From the patient care side, it could mean getting a warm blanket or pillow, answering questions, directing patients and families around the building, and serving meals. All of these tasks help ease the burdens on medical staff so they can focus on what they do best!
I also perform roles like prepping rooms for new patients or simply opening mail or packages for nurses whose hands are tied up. Every day, I learn something new."
"I have seen tears and I have seen smiles a mile wide in the Emergency Department. It is fast-paced, and that has been rewarding. Bassett staff are dedicated to making the Emergency Room a premier environment for both patients and caregivers and I am proud to be a part of it.”
