Bassett Medical Center Hosts Wedding for Couple Who Met at the Hospital

Spending time with patients and families during life-changing events is an everyday part of being a caregiver at Bassett Medical Center. Welcoming babies, saying goodbye to loved ones, or receiving life-saving care are all milestones our staff often take part in. Weddings, however, are not part of our caregivers' normal repertoire. Nevertheless, when Morgan Brooks and Brad Sramek approached staff in January about a marriage ceremony in the Fieldstone Chapel, caregivers sprang into action to make it happen.

The circumstances behind the request were difficult. Brad's father was unable to leave the hospital due to a serious condition. Wanting to include him in the ceremony and knowing the window of opportunity was short, they revised their original plans to bring the wedding to him.

This Bassett wedding had another special meaning as well. Five years ago, Morgan, who was a Basset radiology tech at the time, met Brad while dealing with car trouble in the Bassett Medical Center parking lot. It seemed quite appropriate, the bride explained, to take things, "Full circle and get married where it all began."

With help from Bassett's teams in Infection Control, Incident Command, Nursing, Spiritual Care, and Security, hospital caregivers were able to help the couple pull together the event in just 24 hours. By all accounts, the ceremony was beautiful and moving. The couple was able to declare their love and commitment surrounded by some of their most precious loved ones, including their two children and, of course, Brad's dad. Music played, the bride shared their story, and eyes glistened with tears of joy.
