What are lipids?

Lipid is a medical term for fat that is present in the bloodstream. There are two main types of lipids – cholesterol and triglycerides. Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the body and found in some foods that provides energy. Having too much cholesterol can lead to heart disease and stroke. Triglycerides are another type of lipid, or fat, found in blood and foods. Excess triglycerides are often caused by weight gain, lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol use and a high-carbohydrate diet. High levels of triglycerides are linked to heart disease – especially in women. Maintaining healthy lipid numbers is important in preventing heart disease and stroke.
